Challenge: BEYOND the slick ui
Like many others, I started investing this summer (2020) during the pandemic. I was immediately drawn to Robinhood’s slick UI and beginner-friendly approach. But as the new car smell wore off, I realized the app was a lonely experience. To actually learn or validate my ideas, I had to constantly jump between Robinhood, Reddit, and Discord. I was trading in one app but 'living' in others.

user research: validating the lonely investor
I interviewed student investors to identify the friction points in their journey, then began ideated solutions.
The "Gateway" Effect: Users love the UI but find the financial jargon daunting and the research tools inadequate.
Social Safety Net: 100% of users sought "social proof" from friends before making a trade to mitigate the fear of losing money.
The Ghost Town: Robinhood’s existing "Messages" tab was ignored because it felt like automated bot spam rather than human connection.

Pivot - FROM REDDIT TO DISCORD
My initial prototype was a complex, forum-style community tab. User testing killed it. Users felt it was too complex and didn't want another massive social network.
The Solution: I pivoted to "Cozier Communities." Think private Discord-style group chats rather than public Reddit-style forums. This aligned with Robinhood’s minimalist DNA.

FINAL FEATURE: Integrated social trading
The feature I landed on consisted of:
Cozier Chat: Private group rooms for friends and family to discuss stocks in a high-trust environment.
Live Ticker Integration: Users can type a ticker (e.g., $TSLA) to instantly share a live, interactive chart within the chat.
Seamless Trades: Reduced the friction from discussion to trade by allowing users to buy directly from the chat & social interface.

TAKEAWAYS
This project was my first time doing any type of UX design. As a designer with a math and science background, I initially struggled with the ambiguity of product design. I wanted a "right" answer, which led me to create an over-engineered solution that didn't fit Robinhood’s minimalist brand.
Through user testing, I realized that the best design is simply the one that solves the problem with the least amount of friction. By stripping away the noise and focusing on a cozier social experience, I created a feature that felt like a natural extension of the app.
Note: Robinhood is now launching a similar feature, Robinhood Social, in Q1 2026!
